5 Skincare Mistakes That Are Quietly Undoing Your Routine

5 Skincare Mistakes That Are Quietly Undoing Your Routine

Good products only get you so far if a few small habits are working against them. Here are five of the most common mistakes we hear about, and what to do instead.

1. Switching products too often

It's tempting to try something new the moment a serum doesn't deliver visible results in a week. But most active ingredients need 4-8 weeks of consistent use before you can fairly judge whether they're working, since that roughly matches your skin's natural cell turnover cycle. Constantly switching means you never give any single product long enough to actually show what it can do.

Fix: Pick a routine and commit to it for at least a month before changing anything.

2. Skipping moisturizer on oily skin

Oily skin still needs hydration — oil and water are not the same thing. Skipping moisturizer can actually cause skin to overproduce oil to compensate for the lack of water content, making the problem worse rather than better.

Fix: Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic option like our Hydrating Serum, which absorbs quickly without a heavy after-feel.

3. Applying products in the wrong order

Layering skincare in the wrong order can mean your most expensive serum barely penetrates. The general rule is thinnest to thickest: cleanser, then serums (lightest first), then moisturizer, then SPF in the morning.

Fix: If you're using both a hydrating serum and a treatment serum, apply the more watery one first and let it absorb before layering anything heavier on top.

4. Using hot water to cleanse

Hot water feels good, but it strips natural oils and can leave skin more prone to dryness and irritation over time — undermining whatever your cleanser and serums are trying to do afterward.

Fix: Use lukewarm water instead. Our Foaming Cleanser is formulated to clean thoroughly even at a gentler temperature.

5. Forgetting the eye area entirely

The skin around the eyes is thinner and shows signs of dehydration and fine lines earlier than the rest of the face, but it's also the area people most often skip — either because they run out of time or assume their regular moisturizer covers it.

Fix: A dedicated eye crème like LumiLift is formulated specifically for that thinner skin, with a gentler concentration of actives than a face serum.

The common thread

None of these fixes require buying more products — just using what you already have a little more thoughtfully. Small, consistent adjustments tend to matter more than any single "miracle" product.
